Colombo: In a swift and coordinated humanitarian operation, the Sri Lankan Navy rescued 32 Iranian sailors after a naval vessel encountered a serious emergency off the southern coast of Sri Lanka last weekend.
According to Sri Lankan authorities, the rescued sailors were immediately transported to nearby medical facilities. Doctors confirmed that one sailor is currently in critical condition, while seven others are receiving emergency treatment for serious injuries. The remaining sailors sustained minor injuries and are reported to be in stable condition.
The sailors were aboard the Iranian naval frigate IRIS Dena, which was reportedly conducting a routine patrol mission in the Indian Ocean when the incident occurred near the coastal city of Galle. Preliminary reports suggest the vessel ran aground before beginning to take on water, forcing the crew to abandon parts of the ship as the situation deteriorated.
Several sailors managed to escape the vessel before it started sinking. However, some crew members remain unaccounted for, prompting Sri Lanka to launch an ongoing search and rescue mission. The operation currently involves Sri Lanka’s navy, maritime authorities, and air force, with support from neighboring regional partners.
Sri Lankan officials stated that the exact cause of the incident remains unclear. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of mechanical failure, navigational error, or external factors, and a formal investigation is expected to be launched once all survivors are accounted for.
A Sri Lankan medical official, Dr. Anil Singhe, confirmed that emergency teams acted quickly after the rescue operation. “The situation is stable but serious,” he said. “One sailor remains critical, seven require intensive treatment, while others have suffered moderate or minor injuries.”
Iranian diplomatic officials have expressed appreciation for Sri Lanka’s rapid response and humanitarian support. They stated that the rescued sailors are receiving the best possible care and thanked Sri Lankan authorities for their swift rescue efforts and medical assistance.
Local authorities in Galle also expressed sympathy for the victims and emphasized Sri Lanka’s commitment to assisting all those affected by the maritime emergency.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy,” a Sri Lankan official involved in the rescue operation said. “Our teams will continue the search operation and work closely with Iranian authorities to ensure the safety of all sailors involved.”
As search operations continue in the surrounding waters, maritime authorities remain hopeful that any missing crew members may still be located. Further updates are expected as the investigation into the incident develops.
