TikTok, the popular social media platform owned by Chinese tech giant ByteDance, reached a settlement agreement just hours before the first trial was set to begin over allegations that the app contributes to social media addiction among young users. The lawsuit, brought forward in federal court in San Francisco by 15 U.S. plaintiffs, accused TikTok of using manipulative techniques to keep users engaged for longer periods and causing harm to their mental health and well-being.
The trial’s defendants included not only ByteDance but also Meta Platforms Inc., which owns Facebook and Instagram, and YouTube parent Google. The plaintiffs claimed that these companies employ similar tactics to keep users on their platforms, leading to increased screen time, sleep deprivation, anxiety, depression, and other negative effects, especially in younger generations.

Plaintiff lawyers have stated that they are pleased with the agreement as it sends an important message to tech companies regarding their responsibilities to protect their users from harmful practices.

The Lawsuit: In May 2023, a group of 15 plaintiffs filed the lawsuit against TikTok, Meta Platforms Inc., and Google, alleging that the companies use various techniques to create addictive platforms, including algorithms designed to keep users engaged for extended periods, autoplay features, notifications, and targeted advertising. The plaintiffs claimed that these tactics negatively impact their mental health and well-being by causing addiction, sleep deprivation, anxiety, depression, and other issues.
In a statement, the plaintiffs’ lawyers argued that “these companies have known about the addictive nature of their
